There are several different types of pain killers, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Opioids, also called narcotics, are pain killers as well.
Pain killers/prescription drugs, are usually developed and marketed by pharmaceutical companies for general or specific healthcare applications. The pharmaceutical industry is divided about whether they should be available over the counter (OTC) or require a prescription. Whether pain killers are bought over the counter or prescribed, they can both be abused.
Prescription drugs or any substances that are not sold OTC are divided into five schedules, labeled with Roman numerals. Schedule I drugs are drugs which there is currently no acceptable medical usage. Schedule I includes, heroin, LSD, marijuana etc... For Schedules II-V, all drugs must have a medical use, the least restricted is Schedule V, which includes medications like cough medicines with codeine; the most restrictive is Schedule II, which includes morphine, cocaine, and methadone.
